Bargeman

My Husbands 4x Great Grandad John Pritchard was born and lived in Hampshire all his life, on the 1841 and 1851 census he lived in the St John's area of Winchester and his occupation was a bargeman, can anyone point me in the right direction to find any information about what kind of work he may have done.
