Thanks for all help Lucy + Whiteout
So i was wrong about Southampton being too far for a Scots man to travel . !
It does fit with the possible 1920-22 marriage ;
his wife jeanie had 3 siblings who left for USA in 1923 joined by another in 1929 . their deceased fATHER  was   Clothlapper  + they were very poor so a financial incentive is probably likely

Hi brigidmac

Daughter, Jean Kyle MacDermid BLACK, wasn't eligible to vote until she was 21 years of age.  So assuming her birth year - given as 1923 on her death registration - is correct, the first general election in which she was entitled to enrol to vote, would be 1946.
She married two years after this (her full name as above ^ is shown on the marriage index) so from the next election year 1949, she is listed under her married surname DWYER (though has, for whatever reason, ceased using her "third" name of MacDermid.)

Thanks again Lu ; I've just been playing with scottish Valuation rolls ; they don't give ages but addresses in 1920 + 1925 have progressed me further in search for father's cousins ....otherwise couldn't find the ones who stayed in Lanarkshire

 scottish death certs are also very useful ;
I'm going to try accessing some wills that you can now see on line ..it's all go

  thanks to your help I managed to see the probate records ... James duff Black left everything to his daughter jean in 1964  so i presume the son born in Scotland . around 1922, had died   I don't know if he used a middle name    he was possibly the millhand on the 1954 electoral rolls  as father james duff Black is a miner /ex-miner on ALL records now

there must be a lot of James black's in NZ
can anyone find his death  pls .

It may be easier if you find James the son's birth if he was four on arrival his birth would have been C 1922 not 1926,also did hr have a middle name.

Cheers Janette
