An online tree states that he had a son named Joseph James Spratt Smith.  Do you know if Spratt was a family name?  Could it have been from Margaret's side, or James' side?

Also, could James and Margaret have followed the Irish naming pattern (naming children after relatives)?  The online tree shows their children as Martha A, Isabella, Mary Jane, William John and Joseph James Spratt.
