Trimley St Mary map
« on: Monday 04 May 15 14:02 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anybody has a copy of an old map of Trimley St Mary (preferably around 1900) as I am visiting the area on Thursday to do some research and need to find a place called Cabbage Square that doesn't exist anymore.

If anyone could help that would be brilliant,

Thank you all in advance,

Lisa

I'm not sure that you will get that kind of detail from these maps. You can change maps via the pull down menu top left.

Old-maps.co.uk may have one that shows Cabbage Square as they do have some nice detailed city plans, but it is now a pay site, and not user friendly as it used to be when it was free. Though you can have a bit of a free search you are restricted in what you are allowed to see unless you fork out the money to do so.

Did you find Cabbage Square on this map?
It is on the list of NLS maps I provided a link to earlier, though none seem to have enough detail to show Cabbage Square.

Lisa, do you have any idea whereabouts Cabbage Square used to be?
Where did you get the place name from? A census?
It sounds like it might be around a high road if it is a Square.

I used to live very close to Trimley St Mary which is just outside Felixstowe.  There's a very lively family history society in Felixstowe, well worth contacting them.  Sorry I haven't got the link on this phone.

Hi all,

Thank you so much for the links to the map sites - although none show Cabbage Square unfortunately :(

My ancestors lived in Cabbage Square (from census records) for over 40 years and they were farmers so i'm presuming they may have been cottages or something provided for the workers so may have been part of the farm buildings, just presuming!  On the census records, before Cabbage Square is "The Street" (which again doesn't exist anymore) and then straight afterwards it goes onto The Rectory.

I will look up the Felixstowe family history society and see if they can help.

Thank you all again,

Lisa

Hi again Lisa :)

You might not be aware that in many Suffolk villages, the main road is known as simply 'The Street'.  In Trimley, that road does still exist but is now called 'High Road'.  Also the house called The Limes is still there, and so are the Three Mariners Inn, The Rectory (now The Old Rectory) and Church Lane.

I've had a quick look at some census images, and I think Cabbage Square must have been down one of the lanes running off The Street (High Road), probably on the Three Mariners side around Keeper's Lane.  The Felixstowe people will know more, I've no doubt - I only lived around there for 18 years ;D

Enjoy your visit, and let us know how you get on :)

Thanks Carol,

That is very helpful information.  I've been to Trimley before, just when I started my research about 10 years ago, but want to go back as i've found out so much more since then.  The graveyard is full of my Gorham/Farthing ancestors (not literally!) and i'm going with my sister this time so that she can see where we originate from too!

Thanks again,

Lisa
