Absent Voters List Kent
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 21:59 BST (UK) »
Could anybody tell me if it is possible to obtain a printed copy or online information for the 1918 absent voters list for Newnham, Kent?

Many thanks

Hi rosiejayne,

Absent voters lists don't survive in all areas.  Here is a research leaflet from the Manchester & Lancs Family History Society. It is very informative and gives a list of surviving areas on the back page.

Kind regards

Thank you both for your information, having checked these links it seems as though voters list for Newnham may not be in existence.

I'm yet to be convinced that everywhere prepared an Absent Voters List.  Researching my local memorial (Newbury, Berks) I soon found that there was no such list but I found that the Electoral Roll included absent voters (marked as such) - sadly no service details.

How useful it would have been to have their service numbers on the electoral roll! I wonder how they compiled the information anyway without the men being present. I beloeve that i have read previously that the voters list may not always be accurate.

Hi newburychap

Have a look at the my reply #1 and the URL.  It should answer some of your questions about the AVL.

rosiejayne: I understand someone went door to door collecting the information details were given by the householder so it could have been the the wife/mother/relative of the solider. If the details are inaccurate this could be why, if no details given this could be because no-one was in when the list was being compiled!

Kent County Record Office holds some absent voter lists for the county - I've used one or two of them in my own research - it might be worth contacting them to see if they hold what you seek:

Yes, I can see how mistakes occurred if information was gathered in this manner! I am amazed that relatives knew the service numbers of their family member anyway!

Thanks, It may be an idea to contact the Kent county Record Office.

Thanks everyone

Gill
