Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable PR/BTs - Sayre/Seare/Seares
« on: Friday 15 May 15 16:29 BST (UK) »
Francis Sayre originated in Podington, born 1567-72, and then appeared in Leighton Buzzard as a mercer, where he married in 1591, and baptised 14/15 children between 1592 and 1616. The PR is apparently deficient after 1614.

If someone happens to be in the Archives between cruises I'd be very grateful for a look up for the following:

Dunstable - marriage 16 Jun 1635 between Sar Merick & Frances Hurdidg (per IGI extracted). Is this really what is written, as there should be a marriage in about 1635 between Tobias Seare/Sayre and a Frances as they started baptising children there in 1636. I wonder if something got mangled in the translation and Sar is actually Seare. Straw clutching time!

Dunstable - burial in 1679 of Francis Seare - is there any more detail eg son of Tobias or even wife of Tobias?

Leighton Buzzard - is there a burial of Francis Seare c 1645? The NBI doesn't seem to have any burials before 1653 in LB, which may be the deficiency referred to.

Many thanks in advance

David.

Francis Sayre originated in Podington, born 1567-72....

Morning....  As the Podington PR don't start until 1602 have you any idea of his parentage? Are you guessing this date range based on the marriage date?

There's a number of Sayer etc name of Podington & Hinwick in the wills index for that period, have you checked any to see if anything is left to son Francis ?

I will look at Dunstable & Leighton Buzzard PR in the week when I'm in Bedford

Have a good weekend

Cheers John

Hi John, Yes I've got the Podington wills. The 1572 will of William Sayre names his son Francis, and the 1567 will of William's mother Alice doesn't name Francis, just two elder brothers of Francis, hence I deduce that Francis was born 1567-1572. Francis married in Leighton Buzzard in 1591, and was involved in a property transaction in 1596 where Francis, mercer of Leighton Buzzard purchased a leasehold property in Podington from William Sayre where Robert & Thomas Sayre were witnesses. The four were all named as sons by William Sayre in his 1572 will. Francis' mother was Elizabeth but her surname isn't known, given the missing parish register.

I'm pretty confident about the relationships and the dates. Some of this family emigrated to the US - at least three children of Francis - Thomas, Job and Mary.

Thanks

David

David

Dunstable St.Peters PRs are transcribed on FreeReg....

The 1635 marriage is the same as you have from the IGI except Francis Hurdidg is the groom

The 1679 burial has Francis son of Tobias Seare

Thanks John, I always forget to check Freereg for Beds events, although I do for other counties. Thanks also for putting me straight on the marriage!

Leighton Buzzard transcript starts the burials from 1562, volume one goes up to 1613. There are no burials in register from 1614 to 1652 apart from some in 1615 & 1616 gleaned from the Bishops Transcript. If you've not got these, then 2 Seare burials.....
9 Apr 1598 Thomas son of Francis Seare
22 Feb 1612-13 Sarah daughter of Francis Seayre

Thanks very much John.

That Thomas burial in 1598 has certainly unleashed a flock of cats. He's meant to have emigrated to New England and died there in 1670! But the NBI on FindMyPast doesn't show the burial, although it does have a William Seare in 1598. Is it Thomas or William who died?

Thanks again
