William Ray - wife or wives
« on: Sunday 17 May 15 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hi rootschatters,

I am trying to decide if William Ray 1789-1864 Croydon Surrey had 1 wife or 3! (and who they were). Or I could be making a right mess.

Eliza / Lucy / Louisa

Baps = Louisa 1825-1830
From Baps = Lucy 1833
From 1841 census = Lucyer
From 1851 census = Eliza

Issue
Susannah 1825
Robert 1828
George 1830
Richard 1831
John 1836

I can post more refs if useful, but I don't want to bias  discussions.  I have a public tree on ancestry too.
Thanks,
Spark

I do not think that the 1841 says Lucyer - more like someone trying to spell Louisa and ending up with Luzer - or even  Leeza.

Could I ask why you went for the London marriage?

Hi everyone,

Chempat - agree not likey Lucyer , I was rooting for Lizer to fit with Eliza

Dawnsh - the marriage was a fit to Eliza Green and a remnant of me stripping out and reassessing

Rosie99 - not been able to view original baps, using ancestry "index only" record here and familysearch (same data set)

Thanks,
Spark

Have you thought about a 'Kent' marriage as Croydon & Titsey are on the border?

Some of my Surrey ancestors hopped over to Edenbridge, I checked those transcriptions but no obvious entries.

I have now spent an hour or so back on familysearch.

William  Ray and Louisa have many  children baptised Croydon & Lambeth
as do
William Ray and Lucy have many children baptised Croydon and Lambeth.  The 2 sets overlap and I am now convinced they are separate families.

So more stripping out and remove the 1841 census record required.

I guess I am still looking for William Ray marriage to Eliza.
Thanks,

Thanks for that Jan57.

This is the family I had originally found (1841) and baptism, when working back and made the assumption father name and occupation correct with him in 1851, but with a different spouse.

On reworking a few years on today,  I am querying that hypothesis.
Thanks again,
