Help with passenger list SS Teutonic??
« on: Monday 18 May 15 00:43 BST (UK) »
I am having some trouble with the handwriting of a ship passenger list.

I am focusing on William (age 20) and Elizabeth (age 16) Fitzmaurice.

William is listed as a laborer. I can not tell if Elizabeth is a Handmaid or not?

I can not tell the town they originated from (Larbert or Tarbert).  The first letter looks like an L to me; it is somewhat different from Tralee above it.

Finally, I am having trouble with the address of Michael (their brother) who is in Philadelphia.  His address appears to be 301 or 301 North or West 17th Street.

It looks like a w rather than an m but Hwaid or Hward doesn't make any sense.  :-\
Is that a feint 'single' written above it?

Hi Floppyslater,

I would suggest that Elizabeth/Eliza's occupation would be 'Hmaid' = Housemaid.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

I think the town must be Tarbert; we have a good example of a definite cap 'L' in "Lab", and the leading letter of the town is quite different.

Further; googling "tarbert ireland" gives some results, and googling "larbert ireland" doesn't...

I too am voting for 'housemaid' and 'Tarbert'.

Thank you for your suggestions and insights!

Another researcher has suggested that the "Hmaid" may be Hand Maiden or a personal servant.  I'm not really sure but it does appear that this girl was some type of domestic help.

I would like to believe that the town of origin is Tarbert although I'm not still 100% convinced it couldn't be Larbert.  It is the first time I came across this name and from previous experiences with local place names it could be a small hamlet tucked away in some remote location.

I need to do some more digging.

Has anyone come up with a suggestion about the street address in Philadelphia?
