TILLEY - a missing link between UK and Australia
« on: Tuesday 19 May 15 08:42 BST (UK) »
We are trying to establish the lineage of a Joseph TILLEY who was born in Middlesex about 1834. He emigrated to Adelaide, Australia in 1849 aboard the vessel Branken Moor. Once there his history is well documented and he died in 1871.

Some early (1960s) handwritten notes suggest that Joseph's father may have been named John and that there was a family death in 1823 in Adam Row, Hampstead. There are also suggestions that in the previous generation (ie at Joseph's grandparents level) there were John  TILLEY and Joseph TILLEY and a Mary ELLis and a Sarah ELLIS.

We have been unable to confirm any of the London references but our main TILLEY family research does show that brothers John and Joseph TILLEY married sisters Mary and Sarah ELLIS in 1771 (Cottingham, Northamptonshire) and 1774 (Tur Langton, Leicestershire) respetively. We know that both had several offspring but have not been able to track those which left the East Midlands.

Any hints and clues would be gratefully received.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll try digging into this further. I haven't found an obvious entry for this family in the 1841 census.

Hi

You also need to consider that on the 1841 census, the age were rounded up or down by 5 years

We do have a marriage certificate which is the correct one (it leads to present generations!)
Joseph Tilley married Bridget Carrig at St Patrick's Adelaide on November 18th 1862. His birth year is given as 1834, marital status 'not recorded', father John (no occupation)

The date and vessel of emigration is open to conjecture - and is probably wrong. One passenger list for the Branken Moor in 1849 has Joseph Tilley travelling with Mary Ann GIDDONS. Another version of the list merely states under steerage passengers: Joseph Tilley and Wife.

I do acknowledge the point about ages being rounded in the 1841 census although more often than not children are given their actual age.

Cheers Alan
