Marriage at Great Tew in 1808
« on: Wednesday 20 May 15 06:00 BST (UK) »
Could anyone please confirm for me the marriage of Sarah COX and William SURCH (surname sometimes written as Search/Serch), at Great Tew on 8 October 1808.  I have been unable to locate any details.

William was born in 1786 and christened on 11 June in Great Rissington, the illegitimate son of Sarah Griffin.  Sarah COX was supposedly born 1787 in either Little Compton or Idbury.  (Unable to verify this as well).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

The marriage is there in the PR's for St Michaels Church, Gt Tew. BUT her last name was entered as WIDDOWS
The entry states he was from Little Compton, Gloucestershire and she was from Little Tew. The marriage was by licence and the witnesses were: John Taylor & George Nash

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thank you so much for that information.

I have had difficulty in obtaining details from Oxfordshire.  Is there any way for me to obtain a copy of this entry in St Michael's Church parish records?

Cheers . . . cmatt

The only way really is to ask the Oxfordshire County Archive Centre at St Luke's, Cowley Oxford - Google it for their phone number and they copy an extract from the actual PR or ask the Oxfordshire Family History Society who are also extremely helpful and they may be able to provide you with a copy of their transcription.

Hello

Thanks for your answer to my question.  I am not a resident of the UK, so it then becomes a little difficult.  I am a member of my local family history society though, so will see what I can find out through them.

Once again, thank you

Regards . . . cmatt

Hi again

I would suggest with the power of the internet it is just as easy to get the info you require, regardless of where you are in the world.

Contact the Oxfordshire Family History Society via their web site at: www.ofhs.org.uk and they will help you. They really do offer an excellent help and advisory service.
