To tidy things up, turned out to be

Kings Norton 1917 Q3 Vol 6d, Pg 36 Age 38

of Bronchiectasis / Broncho-pneumonia at Temp Mil Hosp Monyhull, Kings Heath

while with 2/4th London Field Ambulance RAMC

Date of death matched the other sources so presumably would have been found by GRO on a I-don't-have-the-reference search but instead I took a speculative punt after 1 failure (the Lambeth death)

Did also try the CWGC but they didn't have any other information from what's published on site. And it didn't seem to be in their remit to have that sort of info, anyway.

Answers the Topic title but leaves further questions in that 2/4th were apparently in Salonika from Dec 1916 - Jun 1917 and then went off to Palestine. Think I'll start with investigating whether it's possible to get any idea of enlistment date from the service number...

Thanks for everybody's participation

The Grave Registration Report notes the the marker is 'pr' - ie a private marker, not a CWGC stone.
