Various surnames, south east
« on: Thursday 28 May 15 14:31 BST (UK) »
My grandmother (born 1914) always told me her mother was half Romany. Her mother could have been told she was Romany descent for all I know, but Gran wasn't prone to stories and it was one she mentioned a few times, just not details because I guess she didn't know.

Surnames I have:
Lavender - I know this is a travellers surname, but not one I can link to the area. Another researcher was quite determined in their opinion that the Lavenders of this area had never ever been gypsy folk.
Davis
Burgess
Leeves

These are further back in the tree:
Piper
Aukett
Brook
Bray (New Malden)
Gurr
Sanders
Duffell
de Verrye (right back in 1553, married a Lavender)

Main locations: Warbleton, Alfriston, Brighton, Worthing, Goring, Broadwater, Burwash, Brighton and surrounding parts. I've got back a 100 years if not more on most branches, found a few religious names dotted around (Esau, Levi, Eli, Job) but none in a lump that's helpful.

Sammy; I haven't really been in here in ages. Now, I pop in and you drag me out of retirement  ::)

I just couldn't resist consulting The Book Of Bob on those names there Primarily because I've never heard " Lavender " as a Gypsy surname. Nor has Bob. But, he's never suggested his listing is definitive.

Short answer then? Enough of those names ~ or close run things ~ did indeed come up as attached to Gypsys, in the area ye talking about.

Want to pin point stuff? " A Romany In The Family: Aspects Of Gypsy Genealogy ". Bob Dawson.

And no, it's not my copy. Mine's falling to bits with use!  :-[
GAITES (Alverstoke / Bath Pre 1850)
CURTIS (Portsmouth & 1800's Berkshire).
BURGE (Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire)
HUNTLEY (Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, 'Surroundings')

It's on...one or other of the websites suggested. It's not a very common surname (to my mind) and all the women seem to have kept it somewhere even as a middle name.

I'll consult Bob, ta!
