MCLEOD - Stanchel
« on: Monday 01 June 15 16:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I was wondering about my 5th great-grandfather Donald Mcleod's origins.  The first time he appears in the records is in 1827 in Fife when he marries Rachel Crichton.  He stays in Fife until his death in 1880 and on the certificate his parents are recorded as Alexander McLeod, Farmer (Deceased) and Unknown.  Donald was born in about 1800 and was a Quarryman by trade.  On almost all the censuses his birth place is recorded as Invernessshire and the town is either 'Stanchel'.  There is a rogue census where his birth place is transcribed as Fife, but this could be a simple error.

Another point is that in 1871 he moves with his wife to Culross, Perthshire where he changes from being a Quarryman to being a Toll Keeper at 71 years old!  Then he ends up back in Fife in 1880 where he dies at Hospital Hill.

Thanks, any information on Donald would be greatly received! :)

If you look up Genuki Inverness, under 'Where is it in Inverness-shire?' you will find that there was a place called Steinscholl which was a district in parish of Kilmuir, North Skye. There was also a place with the same name at Snizort, Skye.

Thanks excel!

That's interesting that there are two places it could be.  I guess the reason that there isn't a place called Stanchel is due to a mis-translation by the enumerator...!

Can anyone recommend a good website for Skye records in the early 19th century?  Does anyone know how good Scotland's People are with Skye?

Thanks!
