James Minton, Who were his other children?
« on: Tuesday 09 June 15 20:19 BST (UK) »
James Minton married Martha Sutton in Derby on September 23 1802,this was by licence and does not state whether he was a batchelor or widower. I have found the following children:
James baptized 13 June 1803 Aston on Trent
James       "      12 Aug.1804     "
Martha       "      30 Mar 1806     "                died 1863
Samuel       "     19 Apr 1807      "                died 1810
Elisabeth    "      19 Nov 1809     "                died 1873
Anne          "      18 Oct 1813      "                died 1815
Sarah         "      23 Oct 1817      "                died 1840
James wrote a Will 27 July 1814 which set up a trust for his four youngest children until the youngest was sixteen. These children I would think are James 2, Martha, Elisabeth, and Anne. Samuel was already dead and Sarah had not been born.
Later on in the will he requests that his personal estate etc. be divided equally amongst his children, eight in number. This suggests to me that maybe James had been married before and that there were 4 children from that marriage.
At the time of his marriage James was from Shardlow, Derbyshire, but I don't think that was his place of birth. He died 1817.
Help suggestions appreciated,Liz

Hello  :)

I haven't come across the name Minton before but the name doesn't appear much in the Nottinghamshire indexes.

So, if James did have a marriage before Martha, these could possibly be yours and thought they might be worth considering?

There was only one male marriage in 1873 and 3 Minton brides.

There were 10 Minton baptisms recorded.

Baptism - NEWARK St Mary Magdalene - parents = James & Mary MINTON
9 Feb 1798 - Lucy
18 March 1799 - Caroline
28 April 1800 Eliza
~ ~

Only 5 Minton burials.

Burial - NEWARK St Mary Magdalene
20 March 1799 - Caroline MINTON, abode Newark St.Mary - Dau of James & Mary

Thank you Dizziefish for the suggestion. It is certainly possible, James at one time in his life described himself as a commercial traveler and his wife Martha was part of the Sutton family which had interests in trading vessels on the River Trent and as I remember it Newark is on the Trent.

Hi Liz,

James seemed to be close to the river Trent and as you mention Newark is on the Trent.

I see there are some of James' children who were baptised, married and buried at Aston upon Trent.

Which makes me wonder if the Eliza who was baptised at Newark could be the same Eliza who married John Heirst Stenson at Aston upon Trent on the 6th Feb 1820?

Martha was buried at Aston upon Trent  17th Feb 1847.

I haven't seen mentioned that you are aware that James Minton was also buried at Aston upon Trent?

James has been mis-transcribed as Mintun.

James MINTON - Burial - 8th June 1817 - Aston upon Trent, aged 44

Hopefully the actual parish images for Aston upon Trent, amongst others, will be added to the " Derbyshire - Church of England Parish Registers, 1537-1918" record set soon.

You might find others you are interested in -  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1911752

Sheila.

Thank you Shiela,
I will do some investigating on the marriage you mentioned.Thank you also for finding James'
burial, I knew he had died in 1817 from other sources but I could not find his burial.
