Francis Place, Redcliffe, Bristol
« on: Sunday 14 June 15 08:13 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of Francis Place which was in the Cathay/Redcliffe area.  It was possibly a street off Clarence Road - the New Cut.  It would have been demolished at some time.
My grandparent's  were living there in 1916 but I can find no record of it on any of the old Bristol maps.
Thanks
Mary
P.S.  Since posting this I have discussed an earlier discussion in 2009 which I think might be helpful.  Apparently it was off York Road - the other side of the Cut.

Normally I would recommend using Bristol City Council's website "Know Your Place"?
But the website seems to be down today?! ::)

The website is maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/
It does use the Silverlight plug-in.

Alternatively use maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/?maptype=js for a version without Silverlight.

Many thanks for the replies.  I did try the 'know your place' website but it was down, and it still is this morning (Monday).  Hope this is not permanent as it is such a useful source.

I now realise I was looking on the wrong side of the Cut.  Apparently Francis Place was either off York Road or Whitehouse Street, which is off York Road I believe.  The old maps I do have show some courts or 'dead end' streets which look pretty narrow, going off Whitehouse Street and I guess one of those was Francis Place.
At least I now know its general vicinity.

Is this a discussion of a different Francis Place?

Yes, it is a different one.

The 'know your place' website is now up and running again and I have found Francis Place which was off Whitehouse Street, which in turn was off York Road which ran along the Cut.
Many thanks to you all.

Ah yes!
It shows up on the 1900's epoch 2 map quite clearly.

Obviously demolished (bombed?) and replaced by Doudney Court.

I used to live on Malago Road - not too far away!
