Apparently a rare name, Black's "Surnames" has it in the parish of Blackford in the 1660's.

Apparently a rare name, .......Skoosh.

Yes Skoosh, I agreethis is a very rare name. It would seem that tracing the name back would be easy enough, but this has proven not to be the case.

John Cadzian, born Edinburgh c 1898, was my great aunt's husband. They were married in 1939.

John's father, James Cadzian (AKA CADZEAN/CADGEAN) was born in Edinburgh about 1858 and his mother was Ellen Hughes from Pennicuik.  His siblings were William, Mary and Rachel.

I believe James Cadzian's father was William Cadzian,  born in Fife c 1833 - possibly in the Crossgates/Dunfermline area of Fife. William had a sibling Peter, born in Dalgetty, Fife about 1836.

William Cadzean/Cadzian's father was known as James Cadzean, and his mother was Catherine. The family may have been the CADGEN family noted in the 1841 census in Springhill, Dalgetty, Fife, with William and Peter's father James CADGEN as an agricultural worker.

AS, Cadgen is how the name, with the Scots Z (or Yoch), would be pronounced.
Try a search of the online archive at National Archives of Scotland and see what crops up.

Thanks skoosh - I have tried variations of the name on SP and came up with varying results, some of which have helped, using Caydzian, Cadzian, Cadien, Cadgen, Cadgien! I just found a message on this website for a Janet Walkinshaw which relates to my Cadzian family. Seemingly she married Peter Cadgen AKA Cadzien (Scotland's People) 3 June 1863 so now I have a record to research. The link for this post is
