Orphanage near East Ashford, Kent
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 15:56 BST (UK) »
I am trying to help a friend find out more about her husbands family.
The family lived in the Ashford area.
The mother died quite young, when her daughter was 4-6 years old  and she and her siblings were sent to an orphanage  (c 1916-1919).  I appreciate they could have gone anywhere, but does anyone know if there were orphanages in the Ashford area at this time.

Part of the problem is we cant find the deaths of the mother or father

Thanks

Rosina May Luckhurst was born October 1912.
Parents Harry Luckhurst (born c. 1874) married Ruth Gilbert in 1906
Their first 3 children were Harry, Alfred & Charles.
We have the parents on the 1911 census.
Rosina is said to have been put in an orphanage aged 4-6 years
Her mother is said to have died young.
we simply cant find suitable deaths for the parents, even with the wild cards L*k*st.

Ive also checked military records - with no obvious ones found.

I was hoping that if we could find a possible orphanage then IF records exist they may provide clues.

There was the Kingsnorth Industrial School , KIngsnorth Road , Ashford , also known as Stanhope School , but I think it may have been just for boys. It opened in 1875. The Workhouse was in West Ashford at Hothfield.

As discussing anything found on the 1911 census is not allowed on this forum it makes things a bit hard to give advice
May I suggest you have a good look at the census and note who must have filled it in :-X
Looking on FreeBMD it looks like Rosina was born in the Dartford district as was her brother Harry in 1915 so maybe you should look in the region
BTW there were 2 workhouses in Ashford - another was at Willesborough

thanks for those clues.  I have noted whose name was on the cover page of the census,  and who filled it in c/o.  That all makes sense.
I think Harry's birth certificate  should make interesting reading, as that is the last 'sighting' that seems to exist,  and it should give an address.
It makes me wonder if the mother died after giving birth to Harry.  But she is not on the indexes.  Was her death 'missed' when the central indexes were produced.

I wonder if husband died and Ruth remarried and that's why there's no record of her death under Luckhurst.

I wondered that - but no obvious marriages exist
