New Euxton War Memorial
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 18:01 BST (UK) »
In 2010, following the death of one of our soldiers in Afghanistan, the question was raised as to where in the village he could be commemorated, as no single War Memorial existed.

From that time it was decided that there really should be a place for all the fallen from the village to be remembered.   A group was formed and thanks to their efforts the Memorial is currently under construction, soon to be completed.

Please visit the web-site to take a look  http://www.euxton-war-memorial-group.org.uk/

48,515 visitors so far, and it would be wonderful to achieve 50,000, which would mean 1,000 visitors for every name on the monument.

Well done to all concerned.
I hope you will not mind a small comment.  On the lists of names in the website the South Wales Borderers are shown as 'Borders', and 'Corp' should read 'Corps'.  There may be others, and you probably have local experts to read the proofs before it is too late!

I note you have a "John Cleobury", but his surname is LEIGH

Pte 1387 John Cleobury LEIGH, 1st/4th Loyals, 15/06/1915, Le Touret Memorial
Son of Martha Elizabeth Leigh, of The Knoll, Euxton, Chorley, Lancs., and the late James Leigh

Hi Ainslie, I'm not sure what will be on the stone but that process is already being carried out.

Stephen, you are correct, the the site does show Cleobury, but the research recently done for the Festubert Exhibition - on now - has brought up his full family history.

I must tell you that I'm not actively involved with the project, just trying to get the news out to as many as possible as the group committee have worked extremely hard since 2010.  Their commitment to raising a memorial really deserves recognition and yes, praise and a great many thanks.

Susan

PS.  Are either of you from the area?

I'm from Prescot (4th Generation), but live in Warrington.

My site (see link in footer) has now been online for over 7 years, after about 8 years of initial research, and it still updated every week as more information comes to light.
