Passengers on ship Nieuw Amserdam

I put this request on Roots Chat yesterday and see it is not very clear as to what I would like.

The above named ship left New York for Southampton, England, arriving 15 July, 1960 and on board was Nicholas Diehl and other presumed family members.  On the UnitedStates Census 1920, Nicholas listed his father, American and mother, British.  I have no idea of his mother's British name and wondered if his passport may contain some info.  If anyone can tell me how to access his passport details.  I do not have Ancestry, and of course a picture of him would be wonderful.  Thank you, Lookin2

If I'm looking at the right 1960 voyage, his birth was listed as 06-04-01.  This Ohio death record seems to fit the name and date of birth and gives his mother's maiden name as Sauer - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKYG-ZDB

Where was he in 1920?

Nicholas' obituary appears here - http://www.genlookups.com/oh/webbbs_config.pl/read/766  The mention of travelling around the world seems to fit.

I don't think such recent passport applications are available online.  There is some information about requesting them here - https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/United_States_Passports

That info was a great help I see with all the travels made a passport must have been used.  I have not found his passport yet but am hopeful.  Thank you, Lookin2

Is the family in Cincinnati in 1920?  If so, it was Nicholas' father Nicholas who was listed as having a British mother.

I am in touch with the Hamilton County Library and they have been so helpful supplying me with obits, and in some cases certs.  They also picked up on the inconsistency of German or British for Nicholas  and in one case a 1930 Census that quotes a wrong age.  Really,  helping  me get family history all lined up, they have been great. My file on the Diehls is growing in leaps and bounds and checking info, again and again trying to get it right.

I am also  hoping that St John the Baptist church records, if indeed this was the family church, will supply more info when the Diocese can  get additional staff to  offer genealogy records again.

I was thinking of checking out Govt. records, i.e. naturalization and perhaps war records and as far as Nicholas Jr is concerned, looking for pics. So far, obits received have none. I imagine the archives in Wash.DC would be a good place to look if they are on-line.  I do not carry any subscriptions to Find my Past or Ancestry at this time.

Thanks, as always, for your help.  Lookin2

If you're looking at naturalization records, do you have the names of the people who weren't born in the US?  It looks like Nicholas Jr. & both his parents were born in the US.  If the people at issue were in Cincinnati or vicinity, there is a Hamilton Co. naturalization index here - http://www.libraries.uc.edu/arb/collections/local-government/naturalization.html  There are also some Ohio naturalization records on Family Search - https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1987615

The National Archives does not have their actual records on their website that I have seen.

May I ask a stupid question.  Is a marriage license issued in Hernando County, Fla the only cert. offered. I am still trying to find Laura Alice Wilson's parents' names.  On the Marriage license all it had was witness, Brass,  and County Judge.  I only have a possible Nicholas Wilson as father but something does not seem right as obit for his Laura Diehl was buried in Ohio while the one I am researching  died in Fla. This is what I have:

Birth date by Social Security, 29 May. 1899. Marriage to Wallace Bruce Wilson, 17 Oct. 1925 in Hernando County, Fla and then Tampa Tribune obit.  Died 15 Sept. 1972.  No mention of Laura's parents.

Family Search has a US Census 1920 which states Nicholas' wife Josephine was born in Pa. but all other references state Ohio.  Any suggestions as to where I might get confirmation of a Laura Alice Diehl's parents.

I want to add that Hamilton County Library and Cinn. Library have been absolutely wonderful in the help they have given me.  If I can absolutely check  who Laura's parents were,  all their work was not in vain.   Thank you, Lookin2

I read through my message a couple of times and still made an error.  The parents of Laura Alice are Diehls.  Sorry if this was not clear.  Lookin2
