Finding a location - "Big Matt House District" - Roscrea
« on: Thursday 25 June 15 12:27 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I am trying to find a location that is listed in Co. Tipperary Tithe Applotments for the Roscrea Civil Parish.

According to the entry - John Manus listed in a Townland described as "Big Matt House District"

Despite my searching, I can't seem to place where this location would be (in relation to the town of Roscrea).  I thought it might be in or near Tullaskeagh but I am not sure.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thank you

I think it should read 'Big Malt House District'

There is a Malt store on this map of Roscrea. Perhaps it was the area around that.

This just might be connected to the Birch family, noted distillers / brewers in Roscrea, in the mid 1800s they had a distillery and malt house under the name George Birch & Co...

Edited to add: The Birch family tried to sell the business in the mid 1800s but the sale failed, this link sets out some detail, it takes an age to load, but it might be worth looking at for background:

Hi gaffy,

I was thinking that too.  Birchgrove was the home of Roscrea Whiskey.  I am sure many people were connected to the distillery.  I'm not really sure what a "malt house" would be so I need to do a little more research.  Some of my ancestors were involved in setting up the flax mill at Birchgrove after the distillery went out of business in the 1850s.  The article about Birchgrove from Roscrea People was very helpful in helping me place my ancestors at Birchgrove.

Thanks again for your insights.
