Ellen Gutridge
« on: Friday 26 June 15 16:18 BST (UK) »
help with Ellen Gutridge born about 1807 please.  Cannot find her (or her Father) before her marriage to John Latham which was at All Saints, Rainford, 8th April 1839, marriage record shows father as John Gutridge, Farmer. (Witnesses John Cunliffe and Robert Lawton)  I have tried different spelling of Gutridge to no avail.  Census 1841, with husband John, aged 34.  She died 1876

Any help much appreciated, thank you!

With 1841 being tbe first meaningful census, there arent goung to be many places to find her before her marriage, other than her christening if she was christened.
Where does she say she was born, on 1851/61/71 censuses?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

On those three census she states she was born Haydock but then she is living there also! Her Father doesn't appear on Census 1841 either, I've been stuck on the Gutridge name for some while now

So . . . have you checked Haydock PRs for a possible christening?

So she's the Ellen Latham born c1808 Haydock, according to the 1851-1871 censuses?

I had looked at baptisms round Rainford where she was married and Haydock .... Hadn't got to Ashton in Makerfield  :) think you have found her as everything fits.  Brilliant, thanks very much

You're welcome.

Haydock didn't become a separate parish until the 1860s - its parish church was consecrated in 1866.  That will be why you couldn't find her baptism there  :)

Ellen's parents may have had an earlier daughter also called Ellen, buried in 1805:

How many times do those in the past name a child after a deceased one, I personally find it odd! Thanks very much for the info, reading for the weekend methinks  ;)
