George Arthur Butler Birth Date Anomoly

In the 1890 E/R for Wallace his father's occupation was a farmer at Otautau, which is where George is, and same occupation. Mother shows in the 1896 E/R. Farmer at Otautau right up to his death.

In the 1890 E/R for Wallace his father's occupation was a farmer at Otautau, which is where George is, and same occupation.

The implication being... as you needed to be 21 years old or over an 1890 electoral roll entry means that that George was born pre-1869.

Hi KHP... Not a Minties moment at all :-) The original post has him born in 1867, which would mean his first electoral roll listing was the 1890 listing you and Janette found. More a fudge moment by George than anything else I reckon.

Thank you so much everyone --- the Electoral Roll entry was a 'Sherlock Holmes' moment folks. Great thinking.

So the concensus of opinion is that he WAS the George Butler born in 1867 - and for some reason he later added 'Arthur' as a middle name (wonder why!).

In addition, when he married - he then understated his age by over 10 years and kept up this deception.

Presumably the person registering his death would go by what they THOUGHT was his birth date if they didn't need to produce actual evidence at that time.

(Incidentally George Arthur would also give his son the middle name of 'Arthur' in 1919.)

(Who was Arthur to be SO popular!)

The above certificate was donated to the New Zealand Society of Genealogists.    Either that someone was family of George, or they, purchased the wrong George Butler.
