There is a James Bridge, with Mother Esther, in 1881 in Adlington, so if it is the correct James Bridge in 1881 in Staleybridge they cannot be the same person.

I did locate the James in Adlington but checking the map location it was some distance from Accrington.  The name Accrington is very clear on the census so, reluctantly, I had to cross that option off the list.
On the 1881 census, James 28, is living with Eliza Smith 30 and son John Smith 6.  I believe Eliza died in 1883 (waiting for the cert to arrive as confirmation of her death date) and James then took care of John Smith who named his out of wedlock child with the name Annie Bridge.  Won't get into the confusing details any further, safe to say this James is the one I'm chasing.
Appreciate your help though, it's a curly one.

Annie Bridge, born 1901, 1 Halls Yard Dukinfield.  F: John Bridge, M: Mary Jane formerly Lavin.
1901 census: John Hartley Smith and Mary Jane Smith, 1 Halls Yard Dukinfield.
Halls Yard was close to Pearson Street where James Bridge was living as well as the Lavin family.
No marriage between Smith/Lavin or Bridge/Lavin.
The ‘family story’ was that John Bridge died.  I have a death cert for John Bridge, 1904 aged 27, in the Union Workhouse Ashton Under Lyne but records were pulped during WW11 so no details.  There was a Workhouse location in (now) Darnton Road which is also close to Halls Yard location.

Mary Jane married (McDermott) in 1904.  After Mary Jane’s death  in 1908, Annie Bridge lived with the Lavin family as she was unwanted by the new McDermott spouse.
Over quite a long time, this mystery has driven me slowly mad !!  I just can’t find a way through.

Fresh (and experienced) eyes are always welcome.
Thanks again,
PippaR
