Sarah Jane Meehan.......birthplace Sligo?
« on: Wednesday 01 July 15 14:05 BST (UK) »
I believe my great grandmother (Sarah Jane Meehan) was born in Sligo in June 1855. Her father's name was Andrew. Any assistance that would help me confirm this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi There & Welcome

We are going to need more info to be able to help.

Whom did Sarah Jane marry and where ?

Do you have her on any census ?

Where have you gotten her father's name from ?

Where have you gotten her place of birth from ?

Tara

Thanks for your reply. Sarah Jane married Andrew James Johnston from Scotland. We believe the marriage was in the U.S. I don't have her on a census in Ireland. I got her father's name from her death certificate which occurred in the U.S. Her mother's first name may have been Catherine. Her suspected place of birth (Sligo) was passed down from family members without any documentation. I've seen her maiden name spelled as Meehan and Mehan. That's all I have. I'm still looking for her marriage certificate.

Just be careful about what is passed down. My great aunt wrote that her father was born in County Cork.... In the end it was Co. Westmeath....have you tried to find Sarah Jane on the Ellis Island website or sometimes a death cert or obit in the paper?
Keane (Westmeath)
Ledwith (Longford/Westmeath)
Gray (Sligo)
Eustace (Louth)
Frost (Suffolk)
Farrar (Yorkshire)
La Favor/Lefebvre (Quebec)
Mineard/Maynard/Mainard/ Maynord (Wiltshire/Monmouthshire)

Thanks for the information on the grave markers. They may be her relatives. Spent yesterday afternoon looking for her marriage certificate which may or may not have her birthplace city (just Ireland). She came to the U.S. before Ellis Island. I understand that the Castle Garden records are missing lots of records. Haven't found anything there.
