Kent: Frederick DELL, born 1825 St. Ebbe, Oxford
« on: Friday 03 July 15 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I understand that Frederick DELL was an inmate at Shorncliffe Convict Station for the 1851 England Census, having been transferred there from Millbank Prison.   Sadly, Ancestry and FreeCEN have not produced a result using either his full name or initials "F.D."

Is anyone able to help please?

Shorncliffe prisoners are listed in alphabetical order in 1851, with the D surnames at HO107/1633/286/6.

He is not there, nor is he in the list of a few names following the end of the alphabetical list at HO7/1633/289/12.

What was the source of the information that he was there?
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

The suggestion came via the TNA Criminals, convicts and prisoners (1770-1935) which indicated that in 1849 he was possibly at Shorncliffe.......probably as a result of the mass movement of prisoners from Millbank Prison with the outbreak of cholera.....and as there were no other 1851 findings it was a thought he may have still been there.

Jackson's Oxford Journal published on 13/10/1849 confirmed he had been removed to Millbank Prison
