Thank you annclare and gaffy for the useful information.
Here is the marriage of William Smyth and Margaret Hurn in 1891, Glasgow. The whole page has been written by the same hand, including one other marriage above them registered on the same day, who by sheer coincidence are called Smith as opposed to Smyth. So William must known the correct spelling of his name.

William Smyth, age 25, Stableman - Parents, Thomas Smyth, Shoemaker (Journeyman) deceased and Catherine Smyth, M/S Templeton deceased.

Margaret Hurn seems to have signed her name, perhaps a grand effort for her big day! Still think she wasn't learned though, in misspelling her own surname.

Interesting, while no smoking gun (ie. mother's maiden surname not Tenpenny), once you take into account the combination of names Thomas Smyth / Catherine Templeton, the Armagh location, and his shoemaker occupation, I think you have reasonable grounds to suspect the Drumcree folk are yours. There was a lot of variation and "morphing" of Irish surnames in the 19th c, in my own family I have Pentlands a.k.a. Pendletons, McGaffins a.k.a. Guffys, and someone called Haughan who became Hawkins.  :)

Yes, I think I'll concentrate on the Drumcree area. As I can see no way forward with the Templeton surname. Even with a very wildcard search on the name on LDS, it only seems to bring up the Tenpenny one, that you and annclare have suggested! I must be honest, I'd never heard of the name before.
As for the Town of Armagh, don't think I could remember so many details if asked about my spouses place of birth in another country. I'd have to have it down in writing!
Thanks again,
Ray

Thanks hallmark, good link. I'll hopefully go back further with this. It'll also keep me out of the pub for a few days. Much to the wife's delight!

Just a word of Thanks to gaffy, annclare and hallmark.

Found my g.grandfather at last, and it was Drumcree as you had suggested!

28 June 1862- Willm. James to Thos. Smyth & Catherine TENPENNY.

Had almost given up on him.

Very much obliged to you all,
Ray
