edward w ellis/fannie gallagher

Would someone please give me their valued opinion on the following. I am attempting to trace the life of a Fannie Gallagher who emigrated from northern Ireland and married Edward W Ellis in Philadelphia in 1920 ( I have found their marriage) I know that they resided in Atlantic City New Jersey and I have found them there in 1930 census. But now the mystery? In the 1940 census I have found a Fannie Ellis residing with her husband in Chicago (ward 9). On this occasion the husband is listed as Charles W Ellis. The similarities in the Ellis family between the 1930 and 1940 Census are that Charles Ellis was born in massachuttes as was Edward W in 1930. also the Fannie Ellis is born in in northern  Ireland as was the Fannie Ellis in the 1930 Census. is it possible that this Fannie Ellis in the 1940 census in Chicago is the same Fannie as in the 1930 census? What is putting me off is the Charles W being stated 1940 compared to Edward W in the 1930 census. also what is the reason for the x being marked after some of the names in the 1940 census which also included that of the named Charles W Ellis.? Any thoughts please?

Charles W. Ellis (born Mass.) & wife Fannie (born Ireland) are also living in the 1920 census is Chicago (Ward 9)- in 1940 they are aged 81 and 69 years so a bit older than your Edward and Fannie.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Just so no one else looks for it, Fannie's death was found in Delaware in 1949 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FN5T-BM6
