Looking for information on the parentage of a Jane Withers. On her wedding cert to Alex Howie in Troon 1880 she is aged 25 & her father is James, On her death cert , Troon 1907 her age is 51 - which is reasonable - but her father is Thomas, her husband Alex being the informant On both certs her mother is nee Harper.

As Jane gave the details herself on her wedding day this would be the most reliable unless............... she discovered after her marriage that her father was someone different

If Jane was born in 1855 you are in for a real treat as the births in Scotland that year were full of information...........the only year to have this though

Hi Ammack, her mother's first name was Fanny

I suggest that the 1861 census shown is actually the Harper family, making Fanny aged 28 the mother of Jane & Thomas.

It did cross my mind............this would say that the parent's were not married or...................Fanny was widowed & reverted back to her maiden name as some women did 

What was the status of parents on marriage cert. Did it mention father deceased

If the original 1861 census was looked up on scotlandspeople it would show whether Fanny was single, married or widowed. I suspect that she was unmarried. I did not spot Jane Wither's birth in 1855 on scotlandspeople. Maybe her brother's would be easier to trace.

I also suspect they were not married........nothing on SP for those surnames but may have married in Ireland
