hi all ..
I am looking for a ancestor ( Roberts) who left wales for the usa , apparently this ancestor had a child with a slave woman in Mississippi 1850  .. dna matched my family with the slave woman's child ( Louis hall ) and I am now in contact with his descendants .
I have looked at passenger records and looked at nearly everyone in my roberts tree and I can account for most people through the censuses . I am not having much luck as Roberts is quite a common name.
so I have not got a clue when my ancestor left or maybe come back to wales ,I have no dates for him..
I am thinking it could be a gggreat uncle that I have not found yet maybe, its like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
so maybe finding out more about Louis in Mississippi , may help me connect our two family's.

what records in Mississippi would be of help to me .

no one knows why the surnames are different either as there is Roberts and hall, could this be from the slave owner..
I have followed Louis hall through the censuses and that's all I can think of .
hope someone can point me in the right direction please .

ask away if this is a bit confusing .

thank you

I don't understand how Louis Hall has been unequivocally connected to a hypothetical ancestor of yours.  As for Louis's name, perhaps he took his mother's surname or the name of a stepfather or a slave owner.

there is a match between us with our dna ...so I am trying to find out who the connection is between the two familys..I have a paper trail so far back..
I thought if I could gather a bit more information from Louis hall ,I may be able to find a Roberts in the area or a date I can work off etc etc. but I am not sure what records Mississippi hold ,do they have slave owner records etc ,just any bit of information really that will send me forward rather than at a standstill..
I can not find any more info on my side at moment ,so thought that would be best place to start.

How did someone in your Welsh family come to have a test in order to compare DNA with an American descendant of a slave woman's child?  :-\

It does not sound like you were following a paper trail?

Added:
OK, just about to post this and saw your reply ... a couple of comments:
The match may be elsewhere and not with the Roberts family.
The result might be incorrect, or a "false positive" if such things exist in these tests.
The connection may be further back in the ancestry?
The connection may not be in Mississippi.

Can I ask which company you tested with please?

with ancestry. when the match came up with the hall family ,I was told by them that Louis hall father was white as Louis hall was mulatto..
so as Louis was born in either 1840 or more likely in 1850 we thought we may be able to find the connection between us..

don't really understand dna but the test I took was the older one and was for the male lineage ..I understand the results may not be what they quite give you ,but I thought it may be a possibility in finding the missing link through some Mississippi records.
