PATERSON - STRANG
« on: Monday 20 July 15 00:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have two Paterson Families that appear to be descended from the same couple but current family members dont think they're related. Both families came to and family members still reside in the Charlton (Victoria) area.

Here is what I have on the two

William Paterson born c 1825 died Charlton 1890 - parents given as John Paterson and Mary Strang
Death registered as PATTERSON but this incorrect Reg # 6419
William married Annie Francis in 1865 in Victoria

James Paterson born c 1830 died Charlton 1910 - parents given as John Paterson and Jessie Strang
Married Isabella Watson - there is a marriage between James Paterson and Isabella Stevenson in 1854, Victoria which could be them.

The indexes I have give no indication of where the two Patersons might have come from. Maybe to purchase Death and or Marriage certificates is the only way to work out if they are infact from the same parents

Any help appreciated

It is possible that John PATERSON married one "STRANG" sister (MARY) and on her death married the other (JESSIE) another is that the two STRANG'S are one and the same. Mary Jessie STRANG.

Are you saying you have no information on where the William and James Paterson where born?

Hi Neil,

Yes those two scenarios are certainly high on my list of possibilities. ie Sisters or same person

James named his second daughter Jessie Strang Paterson apparently after his mother. His eldest daughter was named Jane Park Paterson after his wife Isabella's (nee Watson) mother of the same name.

William's eldest daughter was named Mary Elizabeth Paterson. Elizabeth being his wife Annie's (nee Francis) mothers first name and Mary supposedly his mother's name.

The only information I have on place of birth is from James' second marriage which is to Susan McSweeney in 1886 and that says his place of birth is Scotland.

Judith - thanks for the Obituary. Unfortunately it isnt very forthcoming with information. James had 11 children 8 with his first wife and 3 with his second. The Bridge over the Avoca River at Charlton is named the James Paterson Bridge for him.

Thanks again Dale

Hi

According to Familysearch.org there were several children with parents John Paterson and Mary Strange. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1771030

William Paterson born 19th Apr 1823 East Kilbride Lanarkshire
Margaret Paterson born 6th Oct 1826 East Kilbride Lanarkshire
John Paterson born 26th Aug 1828 East Kilbride Lanarkshire
Agnes Paterson born 6th Nov 1830 East Kilbride Lanarkshire
James Paterson born 15th Jan 1836 East Kilbride Lanarkshire
Mary Paterson born 20th Feb 1839 Glassford Lanarkshire

There is only one child with parents John Paterson and Janet Strang (Janet and Jessie are interchangeable in Scotland)

James Paterson born 8th Dec 1830 Eaglesham, Renfrewshire

The 1841 Scotland Census does suggest that they are two different families although it is quite possible they were related. Unfortunately Paterson is a very common name in Scotland.

The following family is living Polnoon (sic) Street, Eaglesham

John Paterson 45
Janet Paterson 35
James Paterson 10

and at Low Kennedin, Hamilton, Lanarkshire is the following family

John Paterson 38
Marion Paterson 35
John Paterson 12
Agnes Paterson 10
James Paterson 5
Mary Paterson 2

There are too many William Paterson to identify him in the 1841 census.

Hi

Familysearch.org also has the following marriages

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1771074

John Paterson & Janet Strang 18th Jan 1822 Eaglesham, Renfrewshire
John Paterson & Mary Strang 20th April 1822 East Kilbride, Lanarkshire

Janet & Mary Strang could be siblings as Familysearch.org has the following

Janet Strang born 20th Dec 1793 Eaglesham, Renfrewshire father Alexander Strang, mother Janet Craig.
Mary Strang born 4th Aug 1799 East Kilbride, Lanarkshire father Alexander Strang

There are several other Strang births in East Kilbride between 1795 and 1803 with father Alexander Strang and no mother named (unfortunately a few Parishes just named the father and not the mother) and then a Strang/Craig birth in Avondale Lanarkshire in 1805

Many Thanks Andy.

They certainly look like the two Paterson Families.

The only concern I have is that the 1841 census has Janet aged 35 (born c 1806) whereas the birth listed is 1793. James age is correct and with no other children you would think this would have to be the family. There is another Janet born in 1807 to Alexander and Janet in Avondale, Lanarkshire - maybe the first Janet died and this second one is the wife.

I see the Eaglesham and East Kilbride though in different Shires are only a few miles from each other.

Thanks again at least I now know what part of Scotland to look

Hi Dale,
For the 1841 census the enumerators were asked to round down the ages to the nearest 5 years
(for people over 15).  So it explains some variation in ages.

  here's a little about it http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?1262

Hi

The 1807 birth is certainly a possibility, as you say the first Janet could have died. It was not unusual to give a child the same name as a deceased sibling. Whilst Familysearch is only an index, and the census information is only a transcript, it may be worth looking at the original images which should be on Scotlandspeople.

as rosball says ages for people over 15yo on the 1841 census were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years so Janet born June 1807 would have been 34 and so rounded down to 30 but I have found many examples were ages are out by a few years.
