John Bradshaw and family
« on: Monday 20 July 15 21:43 BST (UK) »
My great grand father arrived in Australia in about 1889 with his children Emily, Frederick, Herbert and my grandmother Eleanor. They came from England. Can anyone help me and let me know exactly when they arrived and the name of the ship that carried them to Australia.

This seems to be them (family) arriving as fare paying passengers into Melbourne 1885 aboard the CUZCO?

You can apply for a copy of this and determine where in England they came from. You don't say what your great Grandfathers name is and was he married at the time, no wife seems to on the list?

The image of ship's list does not give much information as is often the case with unassisted immigrants at the time.
The only additional detail is they were contracted to land at Melbourne.

The 1881 census shows the family

The 1871 census may have them as living at    Brook Street, Upper Chorlton upon Medlock, Manchester Lancashire.
The Family is John BRADSHAW age 29yrs born c1842, Emily BRADSHAW born Cheshire age 25 born c1846, Emily M aged 3 born c1868, Frederick age 2 born c1869, Unnamed infant 0 born 1871.
They have two servants in the house along with a Brother In Law John HALL aged 18 born Middlesex, now he could be the brother of Emily snr which would make her maiden name HALL. ??? Worth a look up for a marriage anyway. ::)

Neil

MODIFIED: there is a marriage in Manchester 1866 for a Emily HALL to a John BRADSHAW.  ;)

This is your family
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fqc/

and as Sue has mentioned there is little more on the image of the passenger list other than they were English and cabin passengers.

Unassisted passengers were only required to give the following information however it is not unusual to find nothing more than names and ages.

In the census of 1851 there is a John BRADSHAW aged 8 born c1843 his father is listed as a William BRADSHAW aged 65 born c 1786 his occupation was a FUSTIAN DRESSER and Wife was Ann born 1808 aged around 43 her occupation was listed as a FUSTIAN DRESSERS wife. They Lived in Mount Street Manchester and both were born in County. No others in the household.
FUSTIAN DRESSER. ???
Now I had to look that one up  ::) A Fustian Dresser in Manchester was a person who brushed up twilled cotton or Linen into a fabric that was coarse. Apparently now days more akin to Corduroy and used as a warmer cloth than plain fabric.  :P

The 1866 parish record of John BRADSHAW and Emily HALL's marriage show his father to be John and an engraver.  Perhaps the OP has all this info :)
