Where (or what) is Cullien?
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 20:06 BST (UK) »
I've come across a couple of baptisms in the Mullingar parish registers that have the word Cullien or Cullen written after them.  I thought it might have been a place name, like Culleen Beg or Culleen More? Could it be anything else?
Mullingar, Westmeath Ireland: Gilligan/Wall/Meagher/Maher/Gray/O'Hara/Corroon (various spellings)
Bristol: Woodman/James/Derrick
Bristol/Somerset: Saunders/Wilmot
Gloucestershire:Woodman/Mathews/Tandy/Stinchcombe/Marten/Thompson
Wiltshire: Mathews
Carmarthen: Thomas, Lewis
Australia: Mary Lewis, transportee, married Henry Brown - what happened to her?

A direct link would help so people can see for themselves!!

If the site is unsafe as per Ruskies post earlier, people may not want to go and have a look!

The entry is on the left hand page, between the two 23's in the margin - the word is written just before the 17 in the right hand margin, for location purposes. The entry is very faint, it's for Mathew, son of John Maher and Rose Gilligan. This is a December 1848 baptism.

Hi,
Looks like CULLION to me. Unfortunately there are several townlands of that name in the north-west of Ireland. See http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/town_new2.php?MODE=search&TOWNLAND=cullion&SORTBY=townland&METHOD=any&COUNTY=&BARONY=&METHOD1=any&PARISH=&METHOD2=any&PLU=&METHOD3=any&PROVINCE=

Assuming it is Cullion, none of them are in Westmeath  ???

If this is a place where they were living I wonder if it was the done thing to come back to Mullingar for the baptism?

Theres something very similar on another childs baptism - will put a link on later.
