James Sillars

I am trying to find the vessel and voyage that this fellow came to NZ on.  I am quite sure it would have been 1875-1880 and very likely the arrival port was Wellington as he settled in the Wairarapa.
He was born Glasgow 1857 but may not have sailed out of Glasgow.
All you wonderful people out there - I do hope you can help

Hi Bloodnok,

I don't see a marriage for James in NZ,did he marry Ellen in Scotland?
a daughter was born in 1898 and there is a baby buried with them in Masterton

1946/79930   Sillars    Violet May Brough    Ellen   James  born  14/4/1898

Just trying to narrow down dates

Mmm ... there is a James SILLARS on NZ Electoral rolls resident at Inangahua Junction (Buller roll) in 1880-81 (and again in 1885-86) - occupation "miner".

Thereafter the listings for man of this name are in Wairarapa area.  (The 1885-86 Buller listing may not have been removed from roll as James SILLARS also shown at Wairarapa for those dates ?)

Can't see an obvious arrival into NZ for James SILLARS ... and the surname may well be mistranscribed as SELLARS ?

I've also checked on persons arriving in Australia (SILLARS) .. but with no luck so far.
[Often men who went mining on the West Coast, drifted in from Australia ... but passenger lists for the time aren't too detailed - many are just amongst a  "number of persons travelling steerage".

Many snippets about James Sillars in 'Papers Past'.......

Also an obituary in the 'Wairarapa Age' dated 5.5.1919, concerning Mr. James Stone, where mention is made of his daughter, Mrs. James Sillars.
