Photographer 'Douglas of Southampton'
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 11:53 BST (UK) »
Maybe Jim can answer this one ?

I have a photo of Great Aunt, mounted in a frame which says 'Douglas, Southampton   74 St Marys Road'.

Can Jim (or anyone !) give me an idea of when this photographer was working please ?

All I can find so far Lydart is a Miss Douglas, photographer working in Southampton in 1909 but not at this address.

Sorry Jim .... I forgot all about this !

Here's the photo of Great Aunt Lizzie !   She left for Canada in 1899 so it can't be dated after that.
Just look at that nipped in waist !    Must have been agony !

Hi Lydart, I am wondering if those are kick-up sleeves. I have read that they were popular early in the 1890's and then again from about 1897. I wonder if this was taken late 1890's before she left. How old was she when she emigrated.

Either way Jim will pop by with the correct answer I expect ;D

You're sort of right George.
It is a kick-up & was popular for just a short period from 1889-93 when it was superseded by the gigot.
This looks like an early 1890's type.
Hip-padding makes the waist look smaller.
Certainly no Kebab shops round her way.

Thank you both for your answers.   I love the 'sort of right' .... that'll do for me too !

She was 21/22 when she left for Canada, so if that photo was taken in about 1898/9, she'd have been 21.   If taken in early 1890's, then she'd have been a teenager.   I think she looks 20-ish .... so will go with the later date.

Did people have to have passports with a photo ID in those days ?   Maybe this was taken for that purpose ?   When did passports start ?
