Help! Is this my GGGranddad and how do I prove it?
« on: Thursday 23 July 15 14:41 BST (UK) »
For years I have been unable to find my GGGrandfather Alfred Hilton on the 1881 census
He was born 19.12.1839 in Wolverhampton to parents John and Ruth. He married Harriet Matthews (1845 – 1864) in 1861 then married her sister Emily (1851 – 1896) in 1867 (my GGranddad was born 13 days after the wedding)

Emily and the children are easy to find on the 1881 census but no sign of Alfred although I know he was buried in May of 1882

Then yesterday I found the following

30 Willoughby Street, West Derbyshire

John Smith 39 head b Wolverhampton lock maker
Elizabeth Smith 35 wife b Underhill Staffordshire (part of Wolverhampton)
Alfred Smith 13 son b Liverpool
John Smith 10 son b Liverpool
Fanny Smith 6 dau b Liverpool
Joseph Smith 5 son b Liverpool
Benjamin Smith 1 b Liverpool
Alfred WILTON 40 brother in law married b Wolverhampton lock maker

RG11/3702/138/55

I think this is my GGGrandfather but who are John and Elizabeth! There is a marriage 19.3.1865 at St Marys Wolverhampton between John Smith bachelor of Stafford Street locksmith (father John Smith locksmith) and Elizabeth Astley 19 spinster of Carribee Street (father William Astley boat loader) witnesses William and Fanny Astley that would fit this couple but how does that tie in with my family?

An ideas?

Certainly looks like "wife's brother" on the census.

Did Alfred have a sister Elizabeth or not that you know of?  And was that his trade?

The 1881 census entry is clear - "wife's brother".  Assuming that is correct Elizabeth, must be Alfred's brother.  In 1851 there is one sister, Jane, age 4.  How much do you know about her?  Was she perhaps Jane Elizabeth?  Or maybe she just preferred Elizabeth - I have some examples of this in my tree.
Upton, Bishops Wood, Staffordshire.  Jones, Nant-yr-Ych, Aberhafesp, Montgomeryshire.  Evans, Kinnerley, Flintshire.  Dennis, Breedon-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire.  Brown, Red Lake, Wellington, Shropshire.

Alfred didn't as far as I am aware Harriet and Emily had a sister Elizabeth Ann but she died aged 2

Alfred was a locksmith all his life the same as his father

John Smith and family -and Alfred were living in Liverpool Lancs on 1881 census -not West Derbyshire - the registration district is West Derby - but it doesn't cover any area of Derbyshire -often confuses
