Hi

There are some public trees on Ancy.for John William Vaughan which name his parents as Owen Vaughan and Ann Allen and give his birth as 1 May 1853(source of this not clear) and his death 9 July 1837. There appears to be an entry in the probate calendar in 1944 for him which states Vaughan John William otherwise Michael of 32 Lower Grove Wandsworth died 10 July 1937. ( In searching for a death I could not find a death for John William but there is a death for Michael Vaughan in Wandworth in the 3rd quarter of 1937 and a burial at St Annes Wandsworth 15 July 1937, the address given the same as the probate calendar. His age is given as 87, which does not tally with the 1853 birth date). It might be worth having a look at these trees and possibly contacting their owners .

I think David's idea, of the children being adopted, is a plausible one.

If this was my family, I would send off for Owen Vaughan's 1864 death cert.   This should give some idea of his age, which would make it easier to trace him on other censuses.

Looking at the public trees, mentioned above, it looks as though someone has already sent for that 1864 death cert.

They give the date 20th September 1864 age 41

The only Owen Vaughan I can see around that age is the one from Denbighshire.  But he's still alive in 1871, so can't be him

Once again thank you for the help. I been spending the morning going through what information has been discussed. And I am convinced that Elizabeth Vaughan & John William Vaughan were siblings either biologically or by adoption but we don't see them actually together in those early years. They are both put on their marriage certificate the father being Owen Vaughan, gardiner.

Interestingly 1891 census has John William listed as Thomas Vaughan. I have also found a military record for the Territorial Army for a JW Vaughan, 32 lower Grove, St Anne Hills, Wandsworth. The birth date of 1852 also matches but unfortunately that no other information that I could see that would be useful.

I did have a quick look on the Ancestry trees but not a great deal of information regarding sources and the actual marriage shown doesn't actually match the marriage that they claim.

Getting the death certificate for Owen Vaughan is certainly very sound and I shall order that as soon as I come back from doing my shopping.

The death cert. may just give the same information as one of the public trees, mentioned earlier.

Died 20th September 1864 aged 41

Wouldn't want you to waste your time and money.

Hi

Have tried to look for possible Owens and can only assume there is a transcription issue and note
there is a family in the 1851 census which may be worth looking at. They have been transcribed as Warne on FindMyPast and as Varni on Ancestry. To be fair the image does make it difficult to read

Owen Warne b 1801 Ireland labourer (transcribed as Ann on Ancy!)
Ann b 1818 Ireland w
Mary b 1835 Deptford d
Eliza b 1842 Putney d
John b 1841 Putney s
Bridget b 1848 d
Michael b 1851 s
Plus some visitors all born Ireland

Address Biggs Row, St Mary Putney, Wandsworth, Surrey.

(1861 has a family transcribed as Wahan on Ancy and Wahass on FindMyPast which may be the same family in that year ).

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

William, what a brilliant find!

I followed up by looking for a Bridget born Putney on the 1871 census.

There's a Bridget married to Jeremiah Sauntry (looks like Launtry)

Found a marriage 1868 Wandsworth   Jeremiah Sauntry and Bridget Vaughan

Probably a catholic marriage.

This might be them in 1841

Deptford

Eugene Vaughn  40  lab.  Ireland
Julia Vaughn  35  Ireland
Mary Vaughn  8  yes
Ellen Vaughn  5  yes
John Vaughan  2  yes

I googled the name Eugene and, apparantly, it is interchangable with Owen
This would explain why he's transcribed as Hu on the 1861
