This may, (or may not) be a red herring..........

There was an obituary in 'The Press' dated 6.11.1935, re the death of Mr. Thomas Phillips, a well known solicitor of Reefton.

Thomas was aged 64 years, a native of Maori Creek. He was a brother of Bernard Phillips (Hamilton).

Hi Annie,

The 1866 birth you mentioned in reply #9, was registered @ Akaroa.

I came across a death for a Mary Jane Phillips, (aged 74 years) in the third quarter of 1934. Therefore born about 1860.

The death was registered @ Grey which was/is in the Westland registration district..........

This may give further information on the Mary Jane Phillips who died in 1934.

I am thinking more and more that Mary Jane wasn't born in NZ but where is the question!
