« on: Thursday 30 July 15 15:16 BST (UK) »
 Help please
Can anyone help me find the birthplace of my gg grandfaher.
His name was Andrew Robinson it may have been robertson then changed.
He was born1802 st Cuthberts edinburgh.
He was a chelsea pensioner living in Hull Yorkshire.
I have been trying for a few years to find his birth with no luck.
i went into scotland's people and they brought up andrew Robertson b1802 Liberton.
could this be part of st cuthberts,
           Kind regards
             barbara.

The parish of St Cuthberts is in central Edinburgh and Liberton is now a suberb of Edinburgh on the south site of the city,  At the time Andrew was born it would have been a seperate village http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/MLN/Liberton/

Scotlands People has a baptism on 5 Sept 1799 for  an Andrew Robison woth parents John Robison or Robertson and Mary Comber although the baptism was in Corstorphine Edinburgh which would have been a village and parish to the north west of Edinburgh  http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/MLN/Corstorphine/

If he wasn't baptised/christened there will be no record...............I have the same problem  ::)

You may be able to work out who they should be if they used the Scottish naming pattern for the kids which may help.
You may be able to discount some names if you know who his wife's parents were & if any were named after them.

Was he married in Scotland  ???

Maybe a family member was a witness which may help re names  ???

Thank you Kay and Anne for you'r replies.
I did look at the birth in corstofin so ruled that out.
andrew was married in Grimsby his wife was english.
the birth i found in Liberton has father Thomas Robertson/sarah Howison.
these names are in the family Andrew had a daughter Sarah. his son had a boy named Thomas.
On Andrew's army record place of birth just states St Cuthberts no actual place.
once again thank you i appreciated you'r help.

Hi Annie
Thanks again. i don't have any more info on him. i did try a few years ago ask the registry to do a search it cost me 5 pound's  they found nothing so i got my money back.
It's just a shame that the actual place is not on his army record's
He was 26 when he joined the85th of foot in london.
just wish we had some earlier census's.
       Kind Regard's
              Barbara.

I was asking if any of Andrew's children had middle names as sometimes a female maiden surname is used.

Hi annie
andrews  grandson had the middle name Alexander as for the rest of the family they seem to have names from  andrew's wife's sideso this is the only name that stand's out being scottish.
I forgot andrew's son also was named Alexander.
