Peter Brown, Carpenter, Toronto, 1837 & 1847?
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 20:15 BST (UK) »
Peter Brown is mentioned in Toronto directories in 1837 and 1847.  He was a carpenter and Yonge Street is mentioned (house? work?).  I cannot find additional information about Peter.  I am wondering where and when he was born, please?

Could his sons have been James H Brown and/or William Brown?
1868 Toronto Directory (and 1881 census)
James Brown was born in Ireland c1821, carpenter, "bds 74 Adelaide w."
William Brown, Carpenter, 49 Queen E

I am wondering if Peter might be related to my ancestor, Jane Brown, who was born in Belfast, Ireland c1811.  In 1839 in Toronto, Jane Brown Cullen married William Ellison.  William was a carpenter.  Coincidentally (or not), in 1865, William's address was 14 'Shepard", which is around the corner from 74 Adelaide w.

Thank you for taking the time to read about Mr. Brown.   :)  Lisa

Good  evening Lisa,

Have you looked in the 1851 federal census for Toronto? He and family is likely there.

Hi JDC:

I tried and didn't see them.  A few years ago, I had trouble finding my other Toronto ancestors (don't remember which census it was) and assumed some of the returns were missing.  I will have another look; perhaps the Browns were momentarily hiding.   ;)  Thank you for your interest.   :)

I don't believe I did look at every 1861 census.  There certainly were a lot of Browns in Ontario!

Just found this one:
1861 Census, York, York Co.
James Brown, age 37, born c1824 - Ireland.  Carpenter.  Married.
Ellen Martin, Servant, born Ireland, age 13
Martha J? Brown, born UCanada, age 4
Euphemia A Brown, born UCanada, age 2

I will resume looking a bit later tonight.  Thank you, JDC for suggesting the census returns; I'm not sure I would have looked again.  (I was awake almost all night, giving my Brown ancestor one more try.  The connection with carpenters may just be wishful thinking, but it's better than no lead.)
