Hi Sancti
John Gavin born c1836- no certificate found so that's all I know
Married Sarah Reynolds - this from his death cert and fact is listed as widower on subsequent marriage cert. Can't find cert to support this.
Married Mary Ann Gill in Glasgow, St Septimus Chapel 1864 His parents listed as Patrick Givan (sic) and Mary Ryan.
On death certificate 1873 same parents listed but spelled Gavin.
Now he should be on the census in Glasgow for 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871. But I can't find him so far. I suspect he might be born elsewhere. Ireland?
He has children John, Matthew and Agnes.
Am going to work on it tomorrow but any ideas welcome.
Sarah

Where and when were his children born?

What date in 1873 did he die?

Hello Sarah,

It looks like the family are living in Calton, Glasgow, in 1871. thats where a couple of their childrens births were registered, under the surname Gravin.

Regards,
Jonn.

Name of church they married in is likely St Alphonsus (Beside the Barras market)

Can you post the section of the certificate showing his address?

Could it be Gallowgate?

Possible transcription of the 1871 census gives his place of birth as Welford, Ireland (Wexford?)

Thanks for all your help. Here's an update on what I found today:
1871 Census is the correct family at Calton (398 Gallowgate).
1881 Census they are in Govan, following John's death.
He was born Wexford, his children from 1st marriage born Cavan, children from 2nd marriage born Glasgow.
So am off to explore the Griffiths Valuation as I think he might still be in Ireland when it took place.

I still don't know where Greenhall Street was!

There is no Greenhall Street listed in the post office directories from 1870 onwards. The Greenhill Street I identified didn't last much longer and had disappeared from the maps by 1882. Given the Calton & Govan connections it doesn't really seem to "fit" with the family.

What's the Govan address in the 1881 census ?
