Mmm ... don't get too excited over the James Matthew WHITE "find" just yet.   ;D

Electoral rolls suggest he may be a James Matthew White jnr (junior) ... though can't see a New Zealand birth for such a person.

Will dig some more.

Hi Lu -

Well done  -  the "Matthew" in a good find.  As you have no doubt deduced this is very widely used family name.

Cheers B   :)

Hi  ... not really "well done"  ;D   ... I was looking for a death for a James WHITE born c. 1903, and the one with the name "Matthew" appended, happened to crop up.   ::)

I can't see any deaths for a James WHITE in NZ which might fit.

*  Perhaps it is worthwhile after all contacting the funeral director at Hamilton and seeing if they can help with additional info for James Matthew WHITE ?

Other info I have is  --

He possibly was raised by Elizabeths parents,  Matthew and Sarah DUNN of Whakataki.
If this is the case he may have carried the DUNN name.
That he was enrolled at Whakataki school.

Hi ... can you enlighten us further as to the school enrolment, please ?

*   Usually these records bear the name of a parent or guardian ... a birthdate (not always accurate), maybe an address, details of the child moving to another school or out of area, etc etc.

... just adding that I've scoured electoral rolls for James WHITE ... numerous entries as you might imagine ... and nothing that proved in any way, helpful.

As to the James Matthew WHITE > who first appears on e/rolls in 1928 as JMW jnr, I haven't been able to find this man's father (in order to rule him out).   Only other JMW was a chap aged 19 who died in 1908 (possibly a bit young to have been a father - but who knows ? ).

Edit :  Parents of James Matthew WHITE now found - he was born In England.

Hi Lu  --

So sorry, haven't got any more info on school enrolment  -  as this stage just a family rumour I picked up on.    I can understand how this could provide valuable clues.  However I assume these rolls are held in Masterton.   If so I will contact Gareth Winter at the Masterton Library to see what he can find.

Another rumour, although from an unreliable source is that James had been a "steeplechase jockey" !

Cheers  B
Edit  -  just had a quick look & looks like the rolls are at Archives, Wellington.    Will email Gareth anyway.   Will be in Wgtn myself in about 6 weeks but that's a we way off yet.

Hi Bloodnok

... I think it makes sense to go back to Wairarapa Archives and see what they have.   ;)

A long shot I know but this guy is in Masterton cemetery - birth year ok - ex serviceman

1960/25198   Dunn    William James       57Y

He is not part of our Dunn clan that I was previously aware of......

Not to be confused with this one that I know about - Elizabeth's young brother.......

1891/10246   Dunn    William Hugh    Sarah   Matthew
