Separate in 1841 - George BULL, Sarah GREGORY
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 14:14 BST (UK) »
25 Jan 1835 George Bull a widower married Sarah Gregory a Widow in Bath.
His first wife died 1832 her first husband in 1829.
they are both on the 1851 census together HO107/1939 fo111 p 4-5
Why then were they living separately in 1841?
He HO107/ 939/18 fo40 p31
Her HO107/ 939/18 fo25 p 1
Both are with children of their first marriages

Any ideas of why?

The census is a snapshot of one night, they were probably staying with their children over the weekend.

The instructions to the enumerator in 1841 were to record the names of each person who abode or slept in each house on the night preceding Monday  7th June 1841. They could have been only at separate addresses on the night of  Sunday 6th of June.

Thanks Stan I think I was trying to be too complicated here I wonder if the rates books are still around that may help to clarify things though perhaps not as I expext Sarah was still the house holder of her children's home From the 1841 and 1851 censuses it looks like George is at the same address ..he has the same neighbours. Catherine Gregory has married and brother John is with her that does not look the same house. I wonder why Catherine and John did not go to live with George after their mother's marriage maybe the children didn't get along together we'll never know
