Well the youngest Gardner child, Robert Clifford Gardner b 1904, stayed a Gardner all his life.

No sign that the whole family changed their surname.

So did Arthur Nigel change his? If so, why?

In my experience, reasons for an adult name change include, in no particular order:

Spouse or former partner still alive
Run away from employer such as the armed forces
Trouble with creditors
Trouble with the law
Anglicisation (not an issue here)

Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)

I am looking seriously at this family. After Roger died (1928 or 1934) there is a marriage of Annie Gardner to a Mossop Jopson???? 1930 kendal

But don't you think that Annie's death would have been the one in Ulverston in 1927?

Can t find any logical reason to link Gardner/Jackson family, perhaps a red herring.
Can t seem to find any of the Gardner brothers in ww1 which might have helped.

You are probably right... maybe we are clutching at straws here. BUT young Arthur moved away to London and married a YOUNG lady, maybe a change of name was a possibility?

Do you have the addresses on the marriage certificate? Perhaps they may give a clue.
