Urban Morgan, 875 Park Avenue, New York
« on: Wednesday 05 August 15 20:34 BST (UK) »
Hi

My wife's great aunt used to work for someone called Urban Morgan who lived at 875 Park Avenue, New York in 1968.

As wife is interested in her great aunt's time in the US, does anyone have any information about Urban Morgan.

The Social Security Death Index has an Urban Morgan born 30 May 1902 and died Jan. 1977 with last residence of New York, NY.  He seems to have made a lot of voyages to Europe.  Does that seem to fit?

There is a NY Times obituary for this Urban which describes him as a leading interior decorator in New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio.  It says he was a former instructor at Parsons School of Design, son of late Arthur & Edna Morgan of Cincinnati.  Service at Spring Grove cemetery chapel of Cincinnati.

Hi

Thanks for getting back so quickly. The wife's great aunt and her husband worked for him as his maid / butler. The great aunt died a few years ago and we were going through some of her personal letters where we found a reference from him to them. Its just curiosity more than anything else.

That is ringing bells with my wife as she recalls her great aunt showing her and her mother a magazine with an article about him. Thanks

The 1940 Census gives his occupation as interior decorator.

A bit about what his estate was used for:

http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2000/03/09/loc_human_rights.html

Quote
By 1979, Dr. Christenson came to UC law school as dean and secured the endowment on which the Urban Morgan Institute was founded. Central to this was lawyer William J. Butler, an advocate of civil liberties and international human rights who knew Dr. Lockwood from NYU.

Mr. Butler was trustee of the estate of Urban Morgan, a Cincinnati native and New York City interior decorator who left his money to UC. Other UC colleges wanted the fund, but Mr. Butler hoped the law school would use it to establish an international human rights program
