I apologise for giving the wrong title in my posting header.  Thank you for all of that information.  I will look at your reply and read it through until I understand it.  Also thank you to Crimea - I was shocked to see Pop's medal was sold.  I wonder how the company acquired it? Mmm!

May I ask what he would have done as a lacquerer?

No idea really. That was his previous occupation prior to joining the RN in which he served as an ordinary seaman.

It is quite sad the medal was sold outwith the family although we cannot know or understand the circumstances of the sale.

Thank you.  I am beginning to understand.  He must then have been working in the munitions factory before the navy.  I apologise;  I do not know what an able seaman would do.  I wonder how he ended up being in the RN in the first place - pot luck or previous skills?  As for his medal, I wonder if someone acquired it and sold it as a bulk sale.
