Where were 1st Bat Leics Sep 1915
« on: Saturday 08 August 15 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters,

I am trying to find out what action the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Rgt were engaged in, in mid Sep 1915.  I have Herbert Edward Flint on our church memorial.  I have got info from CWGC, military will, medal card, local press reports etc

Military will dated 12 Sep 1915
Press reports serious shrapnel wound, treated in French hospital 17 Sep 1915
Died of wounds 20 Sep 1915
CWGC buried in Belgium

So my guess wounding occured between 12 and 17 Sep 1915

Any help in action the 1st Bat were engaged in would be most welcome.
Best wishes,
Spark

From 1914-1918.net :

1st Battalion
August 1914 : in Fermoy, Ireland. Part of 16th Brigade, 6th Division.
Moved on 19 August 1914 to Cambridge and landed at St Nazaire on 10 September 1914.
17 November 1915 : transferred to 71st Brigade in same Division.

His death was probably due to sporadic shelling. You can download their war diary here - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7352340

Thanks Ken,

I always forget the national archives.  I have been and bought the war diary.  For the record they were at Wieltje.

Précis of Battalion War Diary
Night of 9th/10th Sept 1915, 1st Battalion Leics moved into the frontline trenches at Wieltje. 10th Sept 04.35-06.35 & 07.15-08.45 and throughout day, intense bombardment from high explosives or shrapnel shells and trench mortars of all calibre, causing fearful damage to our trenches.  Diary records some men killed, wounded and many men buried but rescued – not sent to hospital!  Relieved to reserve trenches on 16th Sept.

So I am presuming he was wounded on the 10th and wrote his will on the 12th when things were not looking too good!

Thanks again,
Spark
