I appreciate everyone's efforts to clarify these Adkins and Atkins. A summary so far:
Whom I know as John Adkin 1796-1870 was christened on Oct 16th 1796 in Shepshed but according to FS, the entry gave his surname as Atkin. Dorothy Atkin was baptised the same day with the same parents given. So John had a sister. The christian names make sense as well - mother and father - son and daughter. There don't appear to be any other children?

Do we know when the parents died - must have been in either Shepshed or Loughborough.

Looks like young Dorothy married Wm Priestly in 1816.

If John Adkin/Atkin married Dorothy Joyce in Diseworth in 1775, they either had children in Diseworth before moving to Shepshed (20 yrs a long time to go without children!) or there is another Dorothy who married a John Adkin/Atkin. I've had a look in FS but not found anything.

hi
some information about Thorpe Acre;
Thorpe Acre is an area of Loughborough, Leicestershire. Until the mid-twentieth century, it was a hamlet of about twenty houses or cottages, several of which survive. There is also a nineteenth-century church and an old hostelry, The Plough Inn. The church is All Saints

I Live in Gorse Covert right next door to Thorpe Acre & have attended the church for 33 years!! led all the music for 30 of those years.
TA is now part of Loughborough itself.

now back from Lincoln steam rally I can have another look in PRs for anything. I did look for other children Diseworth / shepshed but not indexed so hard going - lot of records faint.

Seriously impressed with all this! Thanks, Diddy. Only worry I have is the length of time between John & Dot marriage and their two children in 1796, but it wasn't that uncommon.
