the transcription of Thomas' second marriage shows Mary Ann Nance's father to be called John, but doesn't give his occupation.

It seems that Emma who was married to Thomas Pill and had Elizabeth had a sister Mary Ann born in 1829. Maybe that fits in! It seems possible that she came and looked after Elizabeth. I  think Mary Ann may have married a Stephen Ellis ( matron) in 1869. I just have to check that out a bit more.

Emma's brother Thomas Nance who married Jane Rapson in the 1850's before coming to Australia, was my GG grandfather.

Thank you to each of you for your help.
