William Scotter - missing on 1871 census
« on: Sunday 16 August 15 14:58 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find William in 1871?

He was born on 28 April 1828 in Norwich, son of Peter and Mary Ann.    They turn up with various permutations of the surname  - Scotter, Scotten and Scottow (and Scotland!)

1841 he is in Norwich with his parents, badly transcribed on Ancestry as William Scotland.
1851 he is in Norwich with his widowed mother working as an Upholsterer
1861 he seems to turn up in London, lodging in Shoreditch working as an Ostler
1871 he has gone missing
1881 he in in London with a wife Mary, living in Mile End working as a carman

He seems to die in London in October 1881.

(There are 2 possible marriages for a William Scotten in London (Mile End) in 1879 to either Louisa Home/Horne or Mary Ann Eatenton or in 1869 to Mary Ann Field or Susan Mayberry so any of those could be wives and to make life awkward, he is not to be confused with his cousin, also William Scotter (1828 - 1906) who was born in the same year, married in London to Elizabeth Thairwall but lived in Hull)

Thanks

Isn't that the wrong one - his cousin as stated in the first post?

A possible:

Thanks both  :)

that one in Shoreditch looks like a hit - thank you.

If the marriage in 1869 is the right William and Mary then, then Jose (or is that Jane?) could possibly be a step-daughter

Could it be Jessie? There is this birth, but you'd need to check she doesn't appear elasewhere in 1871.
