Lancashire Fusiliers WW1 uniform help please
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 10:03 BST (UK) »
Good morning,

Can anyone help me identify if the uniform below was WW1 uniform for the Lancashire Fusiliers or a later date? He is my mother in law's great Uncle, we just aren't sure which brooks brother it is. Walter was born 1896 and I have found military records for him for the Lancashire Fusiliers, he died in service in June 1915.

Birth Place:   Bury, Lancs
Death Date:   4 Jun 1915
Death Place:   Gallipoli
Enlistment Place:   Bury
Rank:   Private
Regiment:   Lancashire Fusiliers
Battalion:   1st 5 Battalion (T.F.)
Regimental Number:   1499
Type of Casualty:   Killed in action
Theatre of War:   Balkan Theatre

His younger brother, John, seems to have escaped conscription by being too young, but maybe the photo is of him, if he served post war if the uniform is later than that?

My other thought is that there here are some pencil marks above his shoulders and the picture was done and framed at portrait shop in Morcambe or Heysham I think. Its quite a large photo for the time, compared to the others that we have. Was just wondering, or thinking out loud, that if the photo had orginially been smaller, and it had been enlarged and touched up. If the person doing it had a looked at a later picture of the uniform, maybe they added the crowns?

He is a Bandsman - the red tunic has the shoulder attachments that are perculiar to the band.  the brass grenade on the collar is for a Fusilier regt.
